Areas and assessment levels
Questions are grouped into areas agreed for the organisation. Examples may include KPIs, 5S, Shopfloor Management, TPM and standardised work. The selection of areas, the list of topics and the wording of questions depend on the maturity level of the organisation being assessed.
Each question has levels from 1 to an agreed number N (usually 1–3 or 1–5). The criteria for reaching each level are described in detail so that assessors can base their decisions on specific requirements. I always agree the number of levels, their descriptions and the criteria with the client.
Observations and actions
An Assessment is linked to an observations table and action plan. These make it possible to record identified improvement opportunities, plan actions, assign owners and deadlines, and track progress. I want an Assessment to lead to concrete improvements rather than end with a score.
